BIIG is a project in my thesis studio, where I develop innovative design methodologies specific to my interest in visual communication and topic of breath. The 19"x24" book serves as a meditation tool, representing the ocean and the process of breathing. Through this project, I have honed design techniques, iteration, reflection, and critical analysis of my topic. The book's name, BIIG, stands for the four basic truths of life: Life is a Bumpy Road, Impermanent, Interdependent, and can be Great.

Process. In this piece, I aimed to visually represent breath and meditation through a thoroughly planned process of cyanotype printing on recycled paper with beach ephemera. I completed 150 sheets, designed to reflect a 30-minute meditation experience, with the sequence narrowing in on one object to represent focused attention. The Japanese Stab Binding was chosen to mimic the lightness of breath and air.

Metaphor. Each page represents a breath and a wave while the book represents the ocean. It takes about 30 minutes to "read" and follows the scientifically proven breathing rhythm of 5.5 breaths per minute. The inspiration came from the relationship between the small self (wave) and the Big Self (ocean) as described in Dharma Family Secrets.
